Canoeing Safeguarding Policy

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to protect children, young people, and vulnerable adults involved in canoeing activities and to provide guidance for staff, volunteers, and participants to recognize and respond to safeguarding concerns.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all staff members, coaches, volunteers, participants, and visitors involved in any canoeing-related activity or program organized by our organization.

4. Roles and Responsibilities

Coaches, Volunteers, and Staff:

Expected to comply with safeguarding training and report any concerns.

Responsible for maintaining a safe environment and promoting best practices.

Participants and Parents:

Encouraged to report any concerns related to safety or wellbeing.

Provided with access to safeguarding information and points of contact.

5. Code of Conduct

All coaches, staff, volunteers, and participants are expected to:

Treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Avoid any behavior that may harm or put at risk any participant.

Never engage in inappropriate relationships with minors or vulnerable individuals.

Avoid one-on-one situations with minors, when possible, and follow best practices for group supervision.

6. Recruitment and Training

All staff and volunteers involved in canoeing activities must undergo a vetting process, including background checks.

Staff, coaches, and volunteers must complete safeguarding training and refresh it regularly.

7. Reporting and Responding to Concerns

Responding to Immediate Threats: If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services.

Reporting: All concerns about abuse or inappropriate behavior must be reported to the Safeguarding Officer or an appropriate authority immediately.

Recording: All reports of concern should be documented accurately, including details of the incident, involved parties, and any witnesses.

Confidentiality: Information about incidents should be shared only with those directly involved in handling the case.

8. Safety Measures and Risk Assessment

Supervision: Ensure adequate supervision ratios, especially for children and vulnerable individuals.

Risk Assessments: Conduct risk assessments for all canoeing activities, considering water conditions, weather, participant experience levels, and safety equipment.

Equipment and Facilities: Regularly check equipment for safety and ensure that all facilities meet safety standards.

9. Review and Monitoring

The safeguarding policy will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with current legislation and best practices. Amendments to the policy will be communicated to all stakeholders.
